Balloon fetish — looner, in the community’s own term — is a small, well-defined category with an
internal distinction that matters more than almost anything else about it, and that newcomers
routinely get wrong.
The distinction that decides everything
The community divides broadly into poppers, for whom the balloon bursting is the
point, and non-poppers, for whom it is precisely what should not happen.
These are not shades of the same preference. They are close to opposites, and a request that
does not specify which one is being asked for is the single most common reason a session in this
category disappoints someone.
Say which, in the first message. It takes four words and it is the whole negotiation.
What else to agree
- Which, and how many. Size and type matter to enthusiasts and cost the
performer money. - Whether materials need buying. If so, this becomes a scheduled session rather
than an immediate one. - Duration. Inflation takes real time, and it is billed time.
Why it is often scheduled
Like other prop-based categories, this one needs materials on hand. A performer without balloons
cannot improvise, and asking a day ahead will change the answer far more reliably than asking more
insistently today.
A genuine safety note
Latex allergy is common and can be serious. A performer who declines latex on those grounds is
not being difficult, and it is not negotiable — this is one of the clearest examples in any category
of a limit that exists for medical reasons rather than personal ones.
The same applies to over-inflation near the face and to anything involving breath. Accept the
performer’s judgement on their own body; they are the one holding it.
Etiquette
Do not push the popping question. If someone is a non-popper, that is settled.
Do not direct continuously. Agree the shape, then let them work.
